Brainwaves was formed in 2000 by Siân Griffith. After successfully competing in swimming competitions, Siân spent some time away from the pool. Siân rediscovered her passion for swimming in the early 90's, and decided to create a career out of her love for the sport. Initially qualifying as an Assistant Swimming Teacher, she then went on to qualify as a Swimming Teacher, both qualifications through the Amateur Swimming Association scheme. Siân consolidated her course learning by working at a Leisure Centre and running a private swimming school, where she taught infants through to adults. Further specialist courses followed, including Adult and Child, before finding the Shaw Method of swimming, which provides an holistic approach to swimming teaching. |
Lessons are carefully programmed to cater for every individual's needs, whether nervous or confident in the water. Brainwaves caters for all ages and all abilities. Each pupil will be taught as an individual, with skills, knowledge and rates of learning specific to themselves. |
Brainwaves is committed to providing a high standard of teaching throughout each course, by experienced and qualified teachers. It believes in a teaching program that gives continuity and a progression of skills. It recognises that, to maintain the highest possible standards, there is a need to continually update it's knowledge and skills. This is a process to which all at Brainwaves are fully committed. |
Pre-School ClassesBrainwaves is fortunate to have Shirley Coop, who takes the pre-school classes. She is qualified ASA teacher and has the specialist qualification of the 'Swimming Teachers Association Baby and Pre-School Certificate’. In addition to her work with pre-school children, Shirley is an experienced swimming teacher with a wide knowledge of swimming. She is a competitive swimmer and her accomplishments within the competitive arena are extensive having been involved in swimming on the island since 1970. Shirley is a master swimmer competing locally and internationally. Brainwaves believe that setting a strong foundation in water confidence is essential for future swimming activities. As Shirley says ‘Teaching pre-school swimmers and training for competition have a surprising number or common factors. The aim is for all the swimmers to feel comfortable and at home in the water, to enjoy working with the buoyancy properties of the water rather than fighting against them.‘

"Siân is a tolerant perfectionist, and each lesson brings a new graduation of refinement...with the precision of a master of Japanese lacquer work, she builds by almost imperceptible layers until the result is achieved" P. Beckett "As a thirtysomething non-swimmer, and father of two, I had always missed out on the swimming pool aspects of family holidays. But then Sian (Brainwaves) taught me how to overcome my fear of water and then how to learn to swim. Now, I feel right at home in water and family holidays are much more enjoyable !" Craig Mitchell "One of my lifetime dreams was to conquer my fear of the deep end of the swimming pool. With Sian's expert technique, guidance and endless patience, I'm now well on the way to being a more confident swimmer thanI ever thought I could be . I am even diving now! Thank you Sian."
