Coaching and Sports Psychology

Technique Coaching

Superior technique is vital to both winning races and maintaining a healthy body, which in turn enables athletes to be the best they can be. Brainwaves offers technique coaching for athletes including competitive swimmers and tri-athletes.

Utilising stroke analysis alongside up to date resources, Brainwaves is able to maximise a swimmers potential by refining their technique through technical stroke information.

Brainwaves works with each individual swimmer holistically, in order to maximise and achieve their goals.

As Bill Sweetenham the former GB National Performance Director states

‘Always practice your skill, because a skilful swimmer will always beat the fittest swimmer
(Sunday Times – January 2004)

So what is Sports Psychology?

Alongside developing technique, stamina and strength, building mental strength is vital to building sporting success. Sport Psychology is learning to think differently.

Sports Psychology is totally different from psychiatry and psychotherapy. Sports Psychology is the scientific study of the psychological factors that are associated with participation and performance in sport, exercise, and other types of physical activity. (American Psychological Association).

To help athletes deal with the psychological demands of competition and training, Sports Psychology develops a range of strategies including:

  • Concentration
  • Building confidence
  • Dealing with set backs
  • Goal setting
  • Imagery
  • Recovering from injuries

We all partake, to some extent, in our own psychology; we are all, to some degree, experts in ourselves. But that does not devalue attempts to explain and replicate successful sporting behaviour.
